GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Green Bay school board is one step closer to easing overcrowding in schools like this on the east side.
Brenda Warren, school board president, spoke to WLUK.
“That is a huge part of our discussion, what do we need to do and then what do we think the voters can support” Right now, the district is narrowing down its options for an April referendum question.
“A lot of decisions that we are going to have to make”
Those options were laid out after a year-long master facilities study was completed.
Some options laid out as a result of a ten year plan included; building a new high school, building a new 4K- 8 school and replacing Baird Elementary School.
On Monday night, the school board saw the potential price tag for those options.
Building a new high school would cost $80 million, building a new 4K-8 school would cost $45 million, and replacing Baird Elementary would cost $24 million.
Nick Kent, with Plunkett Raysich Architects, lead the facilities master study.
“Through a combination of expanding existing schools, replacing Baird Elementary with a larger school on that site, and potentially looking at adjusting attendance boundaries lines, we do have ability to balance enrollment across the district” “I think a K-8 option would be great, an additional K-8, Baird is overcrowded as well and that would alleviate some of the overcrowding at Edison and then addressing a fifth high school,” said Leah Bergstron.
Bergstron has three kids in the school district, all attend schools on the east side.
The school board needs to have finalized referendum question approved by January 24th in order for it to be put on the April ballot.
The school board is scheduled to meet again on January 3rd.
