GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Green Bay Police arrested two men Monday night in connection with a credit card skimming operation.
39-year-old Leonardo Jose Chacin-Paredes of Miami, Florida and 34-year-old Orlando Romero-Santaella of Venezuela Monday were both jailed on a felony charge.
Cops say the device was installed at the Shell gas station at 1146 W. Mason Street at the intersection with South Oneida Street.
Skimmer devices are used to read credit card information when they’re used at a gas pump.
The devices are nearly impossible to detect from the outside. Police believe there may be other skimmer devices being operated in the Green Bay area.
“This investigation will only include the Green Bay PD but all other local jurisdictions and jurisdictions not only in Wisconsin but Minnesota as well,” said Green Bay Police Captain Kevin Warych.
Warych says investigators learned that the suspects had a universal key that could open up all gas station pumps.
He recommends paying for gas inside the station or monitoring your credit card accounts if you decide to pay at the pump.
Police say suspects usually target gas stations that close at night but allow customers to still pay at the pump.
They recommend gas station owners inspect the inside of the pumps near the credit card readers.
Anyone who believes they may be a victim of this crime should call Green Bay Police at (920) 391-7450.
