DOOR COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) – A new conservation easement in Door County has been created thanks to a donation by John and Ann Bladholm.
The 40-acre woodland area along Claybanks Creek in southern Door County was donated in an effort to preserve the land and protect its natural state.
“A conservation easement is a voluntary legal agreement between a landowner and Door County Land Trust that permanently limits uses of the land in order to protect conservation values,” Door County Land Trust Land Protection Specialist Drew Reinke in a statement.
The property protects a white cedar swamp and 400 yards of Claybanks Creek, which is used by migrating birds and steelhead. It’s located less than a quarter-mile from its mouth into Lake Michigan.
The Bladholm’s discovered the land while looking for a campground over 50 years ago.
The Door County Land Trust encourages landowners to consider conservation easements as a way to protect their natural areas and farmland from development. Easement donations also provide tax incentives.
