KING, WI (WHBY-Wisconsin Radio Network) — One of the co-chairs of the Legislature’s audit committee says an audit of the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King will provide a clearer look at the facility than a recent federal report that gave it a glowing review.
The veteran’s home has been under scrutiny following complaints and news reports that raised issues about poor living conditions and inadequate staffing levels. A report released by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services on Tuesday gave all four facilities at the Waupaca County nursing home five stars – its highest ranking.
State Sen. Rob Cowles (R-Green Bay) said he’s much more interested though in the findings of an audit ordered by lawmakers earlier this year. “The Audit Bureau report, when it comes out, will be more comprehensive, get into more depth and help us sort through any dilemmas that are there,” Cowles said.
State Veterans Affairs officials have defended the facility and Cowles hopes auditors will get the true story from employees, and people living there.
The audit is expected to come out early next year.
