The Atlantic reports
that many of Trump's supporters never left their hometown. The piece nibbles at the relevance of the fact but never quite produces it. Here's the closest thing I have to a theory. By their nature most “hometowns” the way they're described here are in rural areas; that is small towns. This is obviously Trump territory.
I grew up in a town of about 800. I'm guess most of the people who live there were born there. In other words, people leave small towns but few move to them. They are insular by nature. So it's not really surprising that rural areas going for Trump would be populated by people living in the small towns where they wer raised.
