UNDATED (WSAU) There are thousands of empty seats and dorm rooms across the UW system this fall. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports campuses across the state are down about 5,000 students.
Not all campuses lost students. UW Madison is seeing about 270 more students, but the UW Milwaukee says enrollment there is down 1,200 students. UW-Stevens Point’s enrollment is down by 629.
7 of the 13 four-year campuses have fewer students this year.
Two year campuses have seen enrollment fall by 22-percent.
UW managers say there’s no single reason why enrollment is down. The overall UW system serves more than 178,000 students. The enrollment numbers are closely watched because student-paid tuition and the grants, loans and scholarships that students receive is the top source of revenue for the UW.
