FISH CREEK, WI (WTAQ) – A Door County landmark for decades has come down.
Eagle Tower was built in the 1930s.
Crews spent all of Monday in Peninsula State Park, dismantling the 76-foot tower.
The tower has been closed for over a year, since officials determined it was no longer safe.
“It’s one of thbe most iconic structures in one of the state’s most iconic parks.”
Missy Vanlanduyt is the capital development coordinator for state parks.
“We did look at repairing it, but it was such a significant amount that would need to be repaired that first it wasn’t cost effective and we couldn’t do it with the tower standing”
The Friends of the park hopes to raise $750,000 for reconstruction of Eagle Tower.
Vanlanduyt says she’s a fan of the tower and hopes it’s rebuilt
“We all share the same sentiment. We’re really sad to see it go, but at the same time, I’m really excited to have a new structure in its place in the coming years that I can share with my family too.”
Pieces of wood from the tower will be analyzed to see if they could be reused on the future tower.
No time frame has been established for the tower to be rebuilt.
