MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ) – A Manitowoc man likely died as a result of a medical condition before a crash at the Manitowoc Speedway Wednesday night.
Police say 27-year-old Matthew Schuh died in a crash during a heat race at 7:30 p.m.
“A car that was driving a time trial crashed into one of the guardrails,” says Capt. Larry Zimney of the Manitowoc Police Department. “I’m not aware of the 28 years I’ve been here that we’ve had a fatal crash on the speedway.”
Schuh was immediately tended to by on-scene EMTs. Due to the car’s design (entry/exit through the window), the car’s roof was removed and he was extricated from the vehicle.
Schuh received immediate medical attention by members of the on-track EMT staff and was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Although the crash occurred in the infield where track staff was present, no bystanders, staff, or fans were injured.
“The Manitowoc County Expo/Ice Center Board and staff want to extend their sincerest condolences to the family,” said Christine Roberts, who read from a prepared statement Thursday. “We continue to support the Eastern Wisconsin Stock Car racing community at this time.”
No alcohol or drug use is suspected, but the Manitowoc County coroner said Thursday that toxicology tests are being done and results are expected in 4-6 weeks.
