NEW LONDON, WI (WTAQ) – Police in New London say two officers shot and killed a man on the city’s east side Friday.
According to New London Police Chief Jeffrey Schleuter, the officers were on patrol in a marked squad car near the intersection of Algoma and Wallace streets when they saw the man. They knew there was a warrant for the man’s arrest.
When officers confronted him, he pulled out a weapon. Schleuter says officers then shot and killed the 31-year-old white man.
On Saturday, New London police identified the man who was shot and killed as Kole Knight. Knight is formerly from Menasha, but court records indicate he’s from Neenah.
The DOJ now says Knight had a toy gun.
His fiancee says Knight had said he wanted police to kill him and said he knew if he showed something that looked like a gun, they would.
Officials added an autopsy was completed on Knight Saturday. The names of the officers involved in the incident are expected to be released next week.
Schleuter did not specify what alleged crime the man was wanted for.
“The investigation can take time to be investigated, and we ask the public to be patient while DCI does a complete investigation,” Schleuter wrote in a news release.
