Essentially,
it's a meeting of the “Establishment” brain trust
to pick up the pieces of the Republican Party after what they anticipate to be a crushing Trump defeat. It is entirely possible, of course, that Trump will win. It seems unlikely, but it is possible.
As the Politico piece points out, win or lose, the group's concern is the GOP brand will be damaged for generations. And it will. The future of the party can't be recaptured until Republicans realize how Trump rose to power in he first place. Yes, his obnoxious message resonated with more on the right than the Establishment wanted to believe.
But first and foremost, Trump's rise was a product of Republican's overpromising and underlivering. And that was the result of failing to stand up to Democrats. Sadly, Bluster and bullying has been mistaken for strength. Yes, to repair the party tolerance of all people is critical. So is understanding what strength really is and how to apply it in political debate.
