FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ) – The City of Fond du Lac will soon have a new way to honor police officers killed in the line of duty.
City council members voted unanimously Wednesday to name a a new street “Police Memorial Drive.”
Police Chief William Lamb says mourning the loss of a fallen police officer is a pain the city of Fond du Lac knows all too well.
“In our community, this department has lost three officers in the line of duty and, of course, just over a year ago Trooper Casper was killed on our streets as well”
Soon an area of grassy land near the Agnesian offices will be a monument to those four officers.
The city had been planning to build the new road, along with a bike path here.
City manager Joseph Moore thought it appropriate to honor the officers.
“They’re there when we’re asleep. They’re there when we’re recreating. They’re there when we’re at work and this is just a tribute to that devotion”
Lamb says this plan comes as officers are feeling vulnerable in the wake of the police shooting in Dallas.
He said, however, the community has shown its support these last few days, reaching out with flowers, food and messages of appreciation.
“It somewhat resembles those periods of time when officers have been killed in our community. So clearly this community has not forgotten”
According to Lamb this new memorial will be a reflection of how much the citizens care.
The project is expected to be complete in September.
