APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) – Fire damaged a house in Appleton Tuesday night.
Firefighters say they were called to the 200 block of W. Prospect Street around 10:20 p.m. for a report of a house filled with smoke.
When crews arrived, they found smoke on the first floor.
They discovered a fire in the kitchen and quickly put it out.
Further investigation revealed that a fire had started in the basement, gone up a wall and then went out by itself.
A person who lives in the house told firefighters she found the fire when she arrived home.
Smoke had to be removed from the building.
No one was hurt, although two cats died in the fire.
The smoke detectors in the house were working, firefighters say.
Officials continue to investigate what caused the fire.
