BROWN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) – The investigation into a former used car dealership is expanding.
The Brown County Sheriff’s Department issued a statement Wednesday saying that they’ve enlisted the help of the FBI and federal prosecutors.
According to the sheriff’s office, a court order shut down Standard Pre-Owned, 4060 Veterans Avenue in Suamico, back in May. Two months earlier, an investigation began with officials looking into financial records. The business was previously known as Backwoods Bargains.
Another Standard Pre-Owned location in Kaukauna, at 2930 Lawe Street, has also been shut down.
At the center of the investigation is a 33-year-old man.
Without specifying the nature of the suspected crimes, sheriff’s officials say they’ve identified hundreds of victims in several states.
“We appreciate the public’s patience and understanding that this massive investigation takes time to properly process,” reads a statement provided by the sheriff’s office.
Officials say those who believe they may be victims of fraud should file a report with law enforcement in either Suamico or Kaukauna, depending on where the fraud occurred.
