GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Doctors want parents to be aware of a viral infection going around this time of year.
Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease usually affects small children under the age of three.
Dr. Lindsay Deuster pediatrician at the Prevea East Mason Health Center explains some of the symptoms.
“The mouth sores might cause some discomfort or pain. Later in the illness, usually after two to three days, then we’ll see the rash, typically on the hands and feet.”
If you’re child has the infection, it’s important to keep them comfortable.
“Things like Tylenol and ibuprofen can help. Cool drinks or popsicles can help with comfort as well. The rash usually isn’t very bothersome, so usually that piece of it doesn’t require any treatment,” says Deuster.
Deuster says to wash your hands frequently, avoid sharing drinks and utensils to help prevent the spread of the infection.
