UNDATED, WI (WTAQ) – If you get a letter in the mail from the Wisconsin Department of Revenue, don’t panic, it could be a good thing.
The department is celebrating its 1 year anniversary of its unclaimed property matching program.
Communications Director Stephanie Marquis explains how the program works.
“We use our tax records to proactively find property owners who maybe don’t even know that they have outstanding property in the state.”
Marquis says the program has been highly successful.
“Last year we returned more that $38 million in unclaimed property and this year so far, we’re already giving $13 million through our matching program.”
Unclaimed property includes funds from savings or checking accounts, uncashed dividends, insurance policies, or other accounts that the owner may have forgotten.
