GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – The Green Bay Police Department is moving forward with purchasing 144 body cameras.
Police department leaders plan to meet next week to get the purchase process started.
Green Bay Police Captain Kevin Warych calls it a sign of the times.
“with change comes apprehensiveness…but institutional, people I think are welcoming”
Earlier this year, the city council approved spending $200,000 for the initial purchase of the cameras.
Bill Galvin is a Green Bay Alderman and a retired Green Bay cop.
“these are not a silver bullet to solve incidents where people question what police officers do. it’s just one angle of, you know, what happened”
There are still more decisions to come. A policy needs to be put in place for when the cameras are rolling.
Some departments have the cameras roll throughout an officers’ shift. Other departments across the country limit recording, because of the cost of storing the video.
