GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – April is Autism Awareness Month and one Green Bay school is helping to raise attention of the disorder.
Red Smith School will be holding their first Autism Awareness Walk on Friday, April 30th.
Elementary autism program teacher, Rhiannon Bey, says they’re hoping to bring support to the autism community.
“The more we get people talking, the more understanding and awareness and support that we will have for individuals affected by autism and their families.”
The event starts at 12:45pm from the school and will take about an hour.
“Just having the walk is another step in the process of bringing that support to the autism community.”
According to the Autism Science Foundation, ASD is a brain-based disorder that affects a person’s behavior as well as social and communication skills.
“We see a lot of deficits in the area of communication, and language, sensory, behavioral challenges,” said Bey.
There will be facts about autism posted along the walk path to encourage more conversation.
Participants will walk around the Red Smith neighborhood located at 2765 Sussex Rd in Green Bay.
