MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ) – Police in Manitowoc have been getting more reports of vehicles not slowing down for pedestrians in crosswalk areas.
Captain Larry Zimney says it’s been a growing problem lately.
“If a pedestrian is in the crosswalk or even at an intersection where there is no crosswalk, a vehicle must yield to the pedestrian until they’ve cleared the crosswalk.”
Police have even been getting reports from city crossing guards of vehicles not slowing down for young children in the area.
Zimney reminds the public that it’s pricey if you get caught violating the rules.
“The fine amount is 250 dollars…so it’s pretty steep. That’s a lot of money for anybody and it’s four points against your license.”
Police also say it’s important for pedestrians to pay attention to the traffic around them as well.
Although there are no reports of any injuries, police urge the public to be mindful towards pedestrians so that everyone is safe.
