De Pere, WI (WTAQ) – The De Pere Fire Rescue Department is reminding residents of the importance of working carbon monoxide alarms.
The department says it has responded to several carbon monoxide related incidents in the city in recent weeks.
Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless and tasteless gas that can be fatal to breathe, if not detected quickly.
De Pere Fire Rescue officials say carbon monoxide alarms do not last forever. Fire Chief Dennis Rubin says residents need to replace their alarms every five to ten years.
“one of our primary missions is to prevent harm in our community. We always want to be able to prepare, mitigate, respond and recover from an event, but the one we prevent is the very best event of all,”
The company First Alert, which specializes in detectors and extinguishers, donated 200 carbon monoxide alarms to the De Pere Fire Rescue to help with the educational outreach.
Any De Pere residents interested in a new alarm are encouraged to call De Pere Fire Rescue at (920) 339-4091.
