GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – The Green Bay Police Department said Wednesday that they’ve received 22 cases of identity theft involving people who tried to file their tax returns, only to learn someone filed them already.
The alert from police reminds everyone to protect themselves from identity theft with tax season upon us.
Green Bay police say you can protect yourself from becoming a victim by being careful about where you store and give out your personal information. Authorities say it’s also important to use secure electronic networks and shred documents that people could use to get your identity.
If you become a victim of fraudulent tax returns, contact the Green Bay Police Department at (920) 448-3200. You can also complete and submit the forms from the Department of Treasury-Internal Revenue Service. These forms help you in filing your real tax returns and assist the IRS criminal investigators.

In 2015, there were 146 reported cases of identity theft in Green Bay related to fraudulent tax returns.
