GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – The process has started to change a major street on Green Bay’s east side, making way for a Festival Foods grocery store.
The grocery, and its parking lot are proposed to sit right in the middle of a major section of University Avenue.
The city’s plan commission recommended on Monday removing that part of University Avenue to allow the project to move forward. Some residents, like Steve Dimmer of Green Bay, have traffic concerns. They’re worried the changes will shift traffic to side streets in the area.
“We have kids in the neighborhood, I see traffic coming up and down the street bad now. What’s going to happen when you close all this down?”
However, the public Green Bay public works director, Steve Grenier, says the city is conducting a traffic impact analysis to make sure that does not happen.
“We can identify what the potential impacts are and then, if the impacts are adverse and significant, we can take steps to mitigate those and alleviate some those concerns”
The city council is having a special meeting Tuesday to start that 40-day window. The hope is to have final street removal approval in April, just ahead of construction season.
