GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Police are looking into two recent burglaries at the Islamic Society of Green Bay, while a possible motive for the crimes is being rejected.
The Green Bay Police Department says the first burglary took place January 23.
“The victim reported $1,000 in currency was taken,” Green Bay Police Captain Kevin Warych told FOX 11.
The second burglary happened sometime between February 2 and February 3.
“There is no information that officers learned about or that the victims reported any correlation to the motive of why this occurred,” said Warych.
During a press conference on Monday, a top official with the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) Minnesota Chapter talked about the criminal activity.
“There is a great deal of anti-Muslim sentiment that has taken over,” said CAIR-Minnesota Executive Director Jaylani Hussein, adding he believes the crimes are tied to the attention over the break policy issue at Ariens Company. “There is a great deal of fear in the community and also a sense of raised attention.”
CAIR’s announcement was that they planned to file a complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission over the firing of 7 Muslim workers.
But Capt. Warych denies that there’s anything to that allegation.
“The incident appears isolated, we have no motive, we have no connection to believe it has anything related to Ariens,” Warych said.
Officials with the Islamic Society also say they don’t believe there’s any connection to what’s happening with the Brillion-based manufacturer.
