Oshkosh, WI (WTAQ) – Wisconsin’s one-of-a-kind sturgeon spearing season is off to a slow start on Lake Winnebago.
The state D-N-R says almost 350 sturgeon were taken Saturday and Sunday on the state’s largest inland lake, and its connecting lakes up the Fox River.
The weekend take was only two-thirds of the 467 fish speared on Saturday alone last year — and officials generally blame it on water that’s not as clear as normal.
Water clarity on the Lake Winnebago could be a factor. Spearers might just not be able to see the big fish.
The season runs for 16 days, or until each of four types of quota are reached.
The D-N-R’s Ryan Koenigs expects the season to last the full length on Lake Winnebago — and it will likely end by the middle of this week on the up-river lakes.
