MADISON, Wis (WSAU-Wheeler News) A second set of bills to fight heroin abuse in Wisconsin is on its way to Governor Scott Walker for his signature. On voice votes Wednesday) the state Senate gave final legislative approval to four measures that Marinette Representative John Nygren says would crack down on presciption painkillers as precursors to heroin abuse.
Nygren authored six bills approved last year — and he says more are on the way in his continued response to his daughter’s heroin addiction. Nygren’s current package of bills include a requirement that drug dispensers report opiate prescriptions to a state database within 24 hours after they’re sold. Pain-and-methadone clinics must register with the state, and report the numbers of people getting methadone in treatment programs — and law enforcement must report information about prescription drug thefts and abuse to the state database.
