GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – A failed valve is being blamed for a fuel spill in Green Bay Thursday morning.
Firefighters were called to the area of Interstate 43 and Webster Avenue around 5:45 a.m. for a report of a strong smell of gasoline. Crews traced the smell to U.S. Oil, where gas was discovered spraying 20-25 feet into the air from some piping. Firefighters contacted U.S. Oil, which sent workers to turn off the supply of gasoline.
The leaking pipe was owned by West Shore Pipeline and was delivering fuel to U.S. Oil when the spill happened. Firefighters say a valve that had recently been replaced failed, causing the spill.
Gas leaked into a berm system, which is designed to contain leaks. Firefighters put a foam blanket over the gasoline to contain vapors and prevent the gas from catching fire.
About 1,000 gallons leaked; none of it got into the water supply.
