WASHINGTON D.C. (WTAQ) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations has asked a Wisconsin firm to change its mind about a new policy that limits the times when Muslims can pray at work.
The Ariens Company of Brillion, which makes snowblowers and lawn mowers, told workers last week to use their two scheduled daily breaks for prayers.
Media reports say 53 workers are affected, 10 have agreed to the new policy, and the others left but can come back if they agree to pray at certain times.
Ibrahim Hooper of the American-Islamic Council says the workers need to pray at certain times like sunrise and sunset which change every day.
Ariens says its manufacturing environment does not allow for unscheduled production breaks — and the company has met with its Somalian employee group to better understand its members’ needs.
