UNDATED (WSAU-Wheeler News) Now that Steven Avery will not be pardoned, two new White House petitions ask for a federal probe into the Manitowoc County murder convictions of Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey.
The White House responded this week to more than 100,000 people who signed petitions on its website, after they saw the Netflix documentary about the case. The response said the president cannot pardon those convicted in state courts — and Republican Governor Scott Walker says he won’t break his policy against pardoning anyone.
The new White House petitions have 1,300 signatures as of early Friday morning. They ask the U-S Justice Department to examine the ways Avery and Dassey were convicted of killing Teresa Halbach in 2005.
