The Green Bay Phoenix men’s and women’s basketball teams are traveling together across Ohio this weekend and the trip got off to a big start Thursday night with both squads winning in Cleveland. The women rolled past Cleveland State 66-45 for their ninth consecutive victory. Kaili Lukan led a balanced attack with 13 points as the Phoenix outscored the Vikings 44-8 in the paint. The GB defense held the home team to just 25.6 % shooting from the floor to improve to 12-2 on the season and 2-0 in Horizon League play. The men had to work uphill after falling behind 15-2 in the opening minutes but they got hot and by halftime were up 11 and they finished strong with an 87-67 victory. The defense forced 23 turnovers and the offense hit from long range, burying 11 three point shots. Turner Botz had a career high 4 on his way to another career high 20 points. Carrington Love scored 16 and Jordan Fouse added 14. The Phoenix have won 10 of their last 12 games after an 0-3 start and they are a Horizon League leading 3-0 in conference play. Both teams move to Youngstown Saturday for another doubleheader against the Youngstown State Penguins.
