APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) – A group that helps refugees resettle in Wisconsin says it has not helped any newcomers from Syria.
Officials say about 2,000 Syrians were among 70,000 refugees who came into the U.S. during the year ending in September.
Mary Flynn, a resettlement manager for Lutheran Social Services of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan, says it can take a number of years for refugees to legally enter the country.
She tells the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel the newcomers must pass “thorough and comprehensive” security checks.
Monday, Wisconsin’s Scott Walker joined about half the nation’s governors in saying they would not allow Syrian refugees.
That’s after one of them was reportedly involved in last Friday’s terrorist attacks in Paris.
