MACKINAK, Mich. (WSAU-Wheeler News) — Federal officials and environmentalists are questioning the viability of an oil pipeline which is more than 60 years old.
They say it could be a threat to the Great Lakes, the source of drinking water for tens of millions of people. Known only as “Line-Five,” the oil pipeline carry product from Superior to Sarnia, Ontario, cutting through the Mackinac Straits. Experts say a spill there could be a catastrophe, calling it the worst possible place for a spill in the Great Lakes.
Enbridge is the Canadian company which operates the line. A spokesman says it is inspected every year and looks as good as it did when it was installed in 1953.
