MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – The Wisconsin Department of Health Services says there are 38 confirmed cases of blastomycosis linked to the Little Wolf River in Waupaca County.
DHS also says another 37 cases of the fungal infection are suspected, according to its weekly report released Wednesday.
Officials say the fungus that causes the infection lives in the soil around the river, and once the fungus is disturbed, it goes into the air and can be inhaled.
Blastomycosis symptoms are similar to those of the flu.
