MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – Wisconsin’s largest utility says it has so much electricity, that others in the state should buy it from them instead of building their own power plants.
We Energies has asked state regulators to reject new natural gas fired plants sought by Alliant Energy in Beloit, and the Wisconsin Public Service Utility in Wrightstown.
Those two would cost a total of $1.2 billion. Instead, We Energies says the two firms should buy power from them — because it has so much in reserve from the plants it built over the last decade.
Alliant opposes the idea, saying it needs to have a long range view on its power needs — and it won’t come from buying power from another utility over a period of 10 years or less.
The state regulating agency is expected to decide soon whether to let We Energies make its case.
