Kewaunee, WI (WTAQ) – A harbor improvement project along the Kewaunee Lakeshore is moving forward, and money from the state budget is paying for it.
The state budget included a $4.2 million grant to fix the 850-foot seawall, build a boardwalk, and renovate the lighthouse.
Work could begin later this year.
City leaders want to develop the land off the harbor as well. Long-term plans include making the area a destination for tourism, and more.
The city will accept ideas and offers soon.
“Harbor communities specifically reinvent themselves, or economically reinvigorate themselves from the harbor area. That’s what we’re going to try to do here. We want to start at our harbor district because that’s really the beacon of our community, and work our way out from there,” said Tom Kleiman, Accurate Marine & Storage Owner.
Business leaders say improving the lakeshore will benefit those in the city, and beyond.
