RIO, WI (WTAQ) – A man killed himself Wednesday after he threatened to murder his girlfriend, and later exchanged gunfire with sheriff’s deputies during a vehicle chase.
It all started just after 12:30 p.m. at Rio in Columbia County. Officers said they got involved after the woman escaped from the man’s vehicle after he tried killing her — and she ended up at a church in Rio.
A deputy at the church saw the man’s vehicle going west on Highway 16. A chase ensued at speeds no faster than 50.
Officials said the chase continued east of Wyocena, where the suspect shot twice at a sheriff’s squad — and deputy returned fire without hitting the pursued vehicle.
Soon after that, the man stopped along a rural road — and officers who approved his vehicle found him dead. No one else was in the vehicle by then.
The man’s name was not immediately released. An investigation continues.
