GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Green Bay Police are investigating a death on the city’s east side near the University of Green Bay.
UWGB police found a suspicious vehicle in the Lambeau Cottage parking lot. A female was found dead inside the vehicle.
Police say the woman didn’t die of natural causes. The female’s identity hasn’t been released.
According to the UW-Green Bay Public Safety’s Facebook page: “City of Green Bay Police have secured an area in Communiversity Park on Nicolet Drive to investigate an apparent homicide. The case has been turned over to Green Bay Police Department for investigation. The victim is not a student and we do not believe she had ties to the campus community. Officers from UW-Green Bay and the Green Bay Police Department are on scene and will continue to patrol the campus and surrounding area.
The campus buildings, routinely locked at night, are now open for business.
Reached by phone Monday afternoon, UW-Green Bay communications spokesman Chris Sampson said, “We’re pretty sure that this is the first report of a homicide in the 50 years that UWGB has existed.”
University officials confirm the victim was not a current or former student of UWGB.
The UWGB campus is in between the spring semester and summer classes so very few people are on campus this time of year. But the university did send out a text alert to all students, staff and others signed up for notifications.
“There’s really a high expectation that the university is going to get out there early and often with text alerts, Twitter, email, the whole nine yards,” said Sampson, referring to their policy in the wake of prior mass shootings at Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois.
At 3:41 a.m. the alert said there was a possible homicide and to protect yourself, seek shelter, hide out and secure your room.
“By the time six o’clock rolled around the public safety here was pretty well satisfied that there was no immediate threat to anyone on campus,” said Sampson.
Green Bay police have not commented on the investigation, but a firearm has been recovered. If you have any information please the Green Bay Police Department.
