STURGEON BAY, WI (WTAQ) – A woman charged with stealing funds while working as the director of the Door County Humane Society is pleading not guilty.
On Tuesday, 39-year-old Carrie Counihan waived her preliminary hearing and returns to court for a status conference July 20. No trial date has been set.
Authorities say Counihan admitted to using the shelter credit card 86 times for a total of over $13,000. She faces 12 felony counts, including theft of a business setting greater than $10,000 and identity theft – obtain money or credit.
A sheriff’s report, which is attached to the criminal complaint, reveals that there may be another $9,605.90 in personal expenses that Counihan charged to the shelter.
