MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – Three groups have asked the state Public Service Commission to reconsider its approval of a new electric transmission line from Madison to La Crosse.
The Citizens Energy Task Force and Save Our Unique Lands say the $580 million line is not needed — and they want another hearing on the project. They say Wisconsin’s total sales of electricity fell by 1.8 percent since 2005.
The American Transmission Company and Xcel Energy say the line’s needed to make the electric grid more reliable, and allow wind energy from the west to be piped into the Badger State.
Also, about 30 landowners in Dane County asked the PSC for a new hearing on the power line. That group says the proposed towers would go within 100 feet of 3 houses near Middleton — and they want almost 5 miles of the line to go underground for that reason.
They also said the project could end up losing money.
The PSC has 30 days to consider both requests for rehearings.
