MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) — It may be a good time to spruce up on your computer security and make sure your personal data is well protected.
Everyone’s got a smartphone these days, and many people have their entire life connected to that device, so make sure it’s protected. State consumer protection administrator Frank Frassetto says putting a password or swipe lock on your mobile is smart practice. “If you set it down and walk away for a moment, someone can take it from there, and you can become a victim of identity theft. So lock down your smartphones and tablets, and use the passwords so that only you can get into it.” It may take more time to get into each time you’re going to use it, but it will keep unwanted people from your personal information.
Frassetto says that many hackers and criminals are looking for unprotected wifi networks to do their work from and steal data. He says you to set both an access password on your home wifi, and make sure the password to the router’s control panel is set as well. “The router I use, I actually update that admin password periodically, and I do keep all my passwords in a safe place And I encourage consumers out there to do that as well.” Without having both in place, someone could install malware on your router, or use your home network for their own purposes.
Many of us use online banking, and Frassetto says you really need to look at the security questions you’re being asked. If you’re not careful, someone could look up your personal information and get access to your account. “Using answers to questions that are very unrelated to each other might help you in the long run, and might make it more difficult for those con people to get to your information and your identity.” That also applies to questions you might set up to reset the passwords on your email accounts.
