HURLEY, WI (WTAQ) – Plans for a iron ore mine in northern Wisconsin are officially on hold for a unspecified time.
Gogebic Taconite has announced it is closing its office in Hurley, saying future investment in the project isn’t feasible “at the time.”
Environmentalists and tribal members fought the project fiercely, even thought it could have brought hundreds of needed jobs to the area near Lake Superior.
Field explorations had already been put on hold after years of opposition.
Gogebic Taconite says it will continue to investigate the pursuit of a permit to mine, but it can’t justify having an office there without the prospect of some form of immediate action.
