FLORENCE, WI (WTAQ) – He called himself “King of America,” and now that man has been found not guilty due to mental disease after threatening tubers last summer.
Police say 70-year-old Gary Bovee appeared from the shore along the Pine River in Commonwealth Township on August 9 and began making threats.
According to sheriff’s officials, Bovee pointed a shotgun at the group as they floated by. He also confronted other groups of tubers.
Bovee was arrested shortly after, along with finding two guns and 280 rounds of ammunition.
Online court records show that one disorderly conduct count was dismissed. Bovee pled no contest to 12 misdemeanor counts of intentionally pointing a firearm at someone, but was then found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect.
There will be another hearing to address release conditions. Court records indicate that Bovee was released on a signature bond.
