UNDATED (WSAU-Wheeler News) Wisconsin cheese production rose by 1.2-percent in November, compared to the same month a year ago. But according to U-S-D-A figures released yesterday, the state’s increase was less than half the national production growth of 2.9-percent.
The Badger State pumped out 241.5-million pounds of cheese in November — still the most in the nation. Second-place California made 201-million pounds, for an increase of 2-percent — a slightly larger boost than Wisconsin.
The state’s Cheddar cheese output was almost 11-percent higher than the year before. Other types of Wisconsin cheeses also had increases — 6.7-percent for American, 1.8-percent for mozzarella, and seven-tenths percent for all Italian cheeses.
Wisconsin makes about a quarter of the nation’s cheese.
The national production for November was 949-million pounds.
