MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – The Board of Regents’ approval was overwhelming Friday for policy changes allowing tenured professors to be laid off if their programs are cut.
They could be fired for poor performance.
The changes are expected to be discussed by the full board at its meeting next month.
Opponents of the new policies say they are disguised to let the University of Wisconsin System cut back on some programs to save money.
The tenure protections used to be a part of state statutes, but Republican lawmakers removed them when they passed the current state budget.
