GREENVILLE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Changes are coming to airports all over the country.
Starting next October you won’t be able to get on the plane without a passport or an updated “Real ID.”
Do you know how to tell if you have one yet?
Take a look at the top right corner of your ID. You’ll either see the words “Not for Federal Purposes” or a star. A star means you have a REAL ID.
Michael Alberts tells FOX 11 he’s not waiting until the last minute.
“We came in as fast we heard on the news that our driver’s license needed to have a star on it.”
We talked to people leaving the Division of Motor Vehicles in Green Bay Friday, to see if they knew about real IDs and if they were offered one.
The answer was yes. Most people knew what a real ID was.
“She said you need it to fly and other government things,” said James Crawford.
Starting October 1, 2020, you’ll need a REAL ID to enter a federal building or fly anywhere.
“Real ID is a program that was started by the federal government to have some base level ID standards,” said Kristin Boardman, administrator for the Division of Motor Vehicles.
Bordman tells FOX 11 the process requires more information than a regular visit to renew your license.
“You need to have a birth certificate, proof of your social security number, proof of your address, and if you were born outside of the U.S you just need to have confirmation of legal presence.”
Appleton International Airport wants to get the word out now to avoid a last-minute rush at the 2020 deadline.
“We know how much people look forward to a vacation,” said Patrick Tracey, Marketing Manager.
Signs are up around the airport and they’re letting flyers know.
