WEST ALLIS, WI (WSAU) A deer in Milwaukee County has tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease. It’s the first time CWD has been reported there. CWD has been present in Wisconsin for the last 16 years, and has been present in some neighboring counties.
According to the state Department of Natural Resources, a four-year-old deer in West Allis was confirmed to have the disease, and other deer will be surveyed in a ten-mile radius.
The deer that tested positive was showing signs of illness on private property on December 10. The landowner contacted the DRN, and a game warden shot and killed the animal.
CWD is fatal to deer, but there is no evidence at this point that it can have any impact on people if they eat venison from an infected animal. The DNR is putting a three-year ban on feeding and baiting deer in Milwaukee County on February 1st.
