RHINELANDER, WI (WXPR-WSAU) — Emergency managers across Wisconsin are using this week to remind residents of the importance of NOAA weather radios.
They can be used for weather forecasts, watches, warnings, emergency and non-emergency information. If there was any event that occurred in [your area] we could possibly get a message through (on the radios). It would alert people to tune into their local radio and TV stations for more details.” Oneida County Emergency Management Spokesperson Dawn Robinson told WXPR Radio in Rhinelander.
Robinson adds that when situations change, every second counts. “When a watch is issued, you should already be looking at what your plan is in case it becomes a warning so you already have those procedures in place. What you should do and what your family should do before an event happens.”
She adds that today’s weather radios can be programmed to flash a strobe light or shake your bed in the event an emergency requiring immediate action such as a tornado warning is issued for your area. Radios can be purchased and programmed at many electronics retailers or your local emergency management office.
Wednesday, May 2nd is NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards Awareness Day in Wisconsin.
