GREENBAY, WI (WTAQ) – The Green Bay Police Department has new transportation.
The state of the art E-bike, is an electrical assisted bike, that allows Community Officers to patrol on a bike that contains an electrical motor that can reach speeds of up to 25 MPH.
“You feel like superman” Police Cheif Andrew Smith joked.
Green Bay Police Captain John Laux said officers can continue engaging the community, but now they can do it at a much higher level than they could on their regular mountain bikes.
“They will go down a hill, go up a hill, they will shred through a park, backyard neighborhoods, over curbs, not a problem.”
The secret is in the electical motor, which an officer can engage to reach the faster speed, without becoming too worn out.
“They will be able to engage the community and be able to fight with a suspect and just do their job without being exhausted.”
Two new E-bikes were displayed out in front of Pete’s Garage on North Broadway Street, but Laux said he hopes those are the first of many.
“I would like to get one for each of the Community Officers since they go out in pairs.”
To do that, the Police Department would need a total of 14 bikes.
The bikes have been funded throught donations, and funded without tax payer dollars.
Captain Laux said they are welcoming more donations to help fund future bikes. Already multiple businesses, groups and anonymous donors have contrubuted to the three bikes they have.
