APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) — Local Fire Departments are using a visual way to share the importance of fire safety, and letting residents know when fires do take place.
Wreaths with green bulbs are hung on each of the fire stations in Green Bay and Appleton. After any fire, one bulb is turned to red.
The first bulb switch in Appelton happened on Wednesday.
Firefighter Brad Brautigam said it was a dryer fire.
“It was a small fire in the dryer of a laundromat. The message that we will get out is not to over stuff a dryer with clothes.”
The Appleton Fire Department will also use facebook to share the information.
“We will post a picture of the wreath and then post the reminder right on our facebook page.”
Firefighter Brad Brautigam said while the goal was to stay green, it does not mean the campaign was a failure.
“We are just trying to make the best out of it, and get that information out there.”
Holidays have high amount of fires from cooking, un-watered trees, candles and heating units.
The campaign started on Tuesday and it will go through New Years.
