MADISON, WI (WSAU) Four state lawmakers are requesting African American representation on a new task force designed to study the state’s prison system. State Representatives David Bowen, David Crowley, Jason Fields and Leon Young say it is imperative that there are African American members given the high level of minorities in Wisconsin prisons.
Currently only one African-American, State Senator LaTonya Johnson of Milwaukee, has been named to the panel. She was named by Senate majority leader Scott Fitzgerald.
The task force will include appointees from Governor Walker, the state Senate and the state Assembly.
Assembly speaker Robin Vos has appointed three Republicans, no Democrats, to fill his slots on the commission. His appointees are: Rep. Michael Schraa (R-Oshkosh), Rep. Mark Born (R-Beaver Dam), and Rep. David Steffen (R-Green Bay).
Governor Scott Walker has not named his appointees yet.
