CAMP DOUGLAS, WI (WSAU) The Air National Guard’s annual “Northern Lightning” exercise is underway at Volk Field in Camp Douglas. Training will last all week and involves about 400 members of the Air Force, National Guard, and Navy.
Organizers say Camp Douglas is a good training ground because it is far from populated areas and has good air space.
Some residents as far away as Adams and Wood counties have heard the sonic booms from military planes in the area. The Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs issued an advisory to local law enforcement should there be 911 calls about the training. The flights will generally take place between 10am and 12-noon.
The flyers arrived at Volk Field on May 1. The exercise continues through this weekend.
