The Green Bay Phoenix Women’s basketball team earned it’s 17th trip to the NCAA Division I national tournament by beating the Detroit Titans 64-52 in the Horizon League Tournament championship game at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit Tuesday afternoon.
It’s the third straight conference tournament championship for the Phoenix, coming two weeks after it looked like they might be denied a 19th consecutive regular season Horizon League title. Trailing Wright State by two games with three to play, Green Bay caught the Raiders to extend their regular season record and earn the number one seed in the Motor City Madness Tournament.
After routing Valparaiso in the quarterfinals and holding off in-state rival Milwaukee in the semifinals, the Phoenix left little doubt it had the best team in the league again.
The Phoenix led from start to finish getting strong games from Allie LeClaire with a team high 19 points. Jessica Lindstrom scored 15 with nine rebounds to earn the Horizon League Tournament’s Most Valuable Player award. Senior Mehyrn Kraker added 12 gaining selection to the All-Tournament team.
Green Bay will learn it’s seed and bracket on Monday night when the field of 64 teams is announced.
